Face Painting at Party on the Hill

Snazaroo Face Painting Sticks

Snazaroo have recently launched their face painting sticks, aimed at Mum's and children who want to have a go at face painting for fun. The sticks are used dry without adding water so are safe for the children to use without creating a mess - and they wash of easily. Just like all of Snazaroo's products.

Face Painting Training Workshop for Beginners in May

Our Face Painting designs are in the Chuggington Summer Annual!

The Chuggington Summer Annual was released today and now I can finally tell you all that our face painting designs for this popular CBBC programme are included on pages 124 & 125!

This project was an interesting one, with the challenge of meeting the design brief for the Chuggington Trainees - Koko, Wilson and Brewster, using only the colours blue, red, yellow and green.

Balloon Modelling for Easter

Happy New Year & Cats Whiskers Face Painting training day.

Yes, I know we are already well into February so this is a little bit late - but in my defence we've had a really busy January! :)

We've been involved with several interesting and exciting face painting and body art projects, all of which will be revealed at a later date! It's very frustrating to keep it a secret but as soon as our hard work is in the public domain, I will certainly upload it for all to see!!

So, for now let me tell you all about our Cats Whiskers Face Painting team training day that we took part in yesterday. We have some fantastic new face painting designs being added into the design books for the new face painting season and had fun learning them all yesterday.

This face painting design is our Sweet Heart Mask - all ready for Valentines Day!

We were also playing with our cheek art offerings for our younger clients and came up with a range of designs for Peppa Pig and Dora the Explorer fans.

Another huge event to hit the Cats Whiskers face painting calendar this year will of course be the Royal Wedding! So here are a few new designs for the patriotic amongst us.

Balloon Modelling Workshops

During December we have had a blast visiting various WI Groups and introducing them to the fun of Balloon Modelling! The ladies have all been very game for a laugh and have done very well grasping the basics of balloon twisting to create wands, flowers and the obligatory balloon dog!

These photos are from Abbots Leigh WI and their president, Val Baker said, "I would be grateful if you could pass our thanks onto Helen Eyre for starting off our Christmas meeting with such hilarity. It was a great success."

Face Painting at Weddings

We received a lovely e-mail today from one of our clients that we'd like to share with you. It was expressing why she uses our services for her Wedding Planning business - Happy Every After Weddings (http://happyeverafterweddings.com/index.html).

I write in regards my daughter`s wedding - you provided services for her at the Tewkesbury Park Hotel in April 2007. For myself, as a wedding planner I know the importance of filling the gap when the room is turned round and photos are taken, we therefore booked with you to cover this time. The price was very reasonable and the guests talked about it for months afterwards.The children waiting to have their faces painted were fascinated and also were able to look through an endless number of photos to give them ideas of what they wanted.

I can truly say that the finished faces were the best I have ever seen.I was amazed at the detail, and that the full face was painted in a really quick time so the children were never bored.Eventually the Bride had her name in sparkly writing and other guests had small sparkly images for the evening.The children enjoyed the rest of the day playing together acting out what they were, it was so much fun for them.

I have since recommended your company to all my brides.Thank you for such a fantastic service, the lady on the day was truly very gifted and the following are just a few of the many comments from guests which I would be happy for you to use;

My little boy had his face painted as a pirate - the result was unbelievable. He had his full face painted very quickly but it looked like an artist had done it and taken hours.

What a fantastic idea! I will use this service for my own wedding next year!

My 2 girls were at first a little hesitant about having it done but the lady asked my 7 year old what her favourite thing was so she had a lion`s face, then my 5 year old had a fairy face with beautifully blended colours and sparkle and was truly stunning.They looked ready to go on stage at a theatre yet it only took a few minutes. They will never forget it.

I would never have thought that this was a service that could be provided for a wedding - it was lovely to watch the young - and old - ones have such a great time. No-one wanted her to leave!

From Lauren,my daughter and the Bride - my mum planned my wedding and when she mentioned this idea I thought it would be good - a little like a stand at a shopping centre. Using Snazaroo Iridescent Powders in Face Painting

The Snazaroo range of iridescent powders have many uses in Face Painting. They can be applied to the skin to create a smooth shimmering base for full face designs or can be used for spectacular eye shadow creations.

In hot and humid conditions or when you are dealing with active children the powders are particularly good for creating a bright and comfortable base for the children’s face paint designs that won’t easily sweat off.

The powders can be applied directly onto the skin with a damp sponge or brush to create a stronger colour or applied with a dry sponge or brush for a more subtle translucent appearance.

Try using the dry powders to add shimmer and highlights on top of a face painted base before adding the final line work to complete the design.

To apply damp:
Cut a Snazaroo high density sponge in half. Dip in water and squeeze out all the excess water so that the sponge is just damp, or spray lightly with a water mister and then using the flat inside edge of the sponge pick up a small amount of powder. Work the powder into the sponge using the lid of the iridescent powder container. When the edge of the sponge is evenly covered apply to the face.

When applying dry make sure that you tap your applicator on the edge of the pot before applying to remove excess so that you can control the application of the powder.

Face Painting supplier to the National Trust

Cats Whiskers Face Painting is now an official supplier to the National Trust. We've face painted at many of their locations across the UK over the past few years but have only recently completed the paperwork to become a regular supplier with an official vendor ID number!

Most recently we provided face painting and special effects wounds makeup at Lacock Abbey for their Autumn School Holiday activities. They have kindly provided us with a reference that we'd love to share with you.

“We held a Witches and Wizards Day at Lacock Abbey. The Cats Whiskers team provided face painting and casualty make up. They were fab.

Really friendly and easy to work with, sitting in an outside marquee at the end of October and staying there all day with total professionalism. Their face paintings were excellent and they had a great manner with the children. The face paintings also did not take that long per child, which was ideal and kept the queue at a manageable length.”

Congratulations to our wonderful Office Manager!

Let me introduce you to the fabulous and fantastic Sharon Fielding!

Sharon has been with the Cats Whiskers team since March 2005 as a face painting artist and joined me in the office in September 2006. Since then she has saved my sanity on any number of occasions and has become our ever efficient Office Manager. If you give us a call, it'll probably be her dulcet tones that will greet you. ;o)

This year she sailed through her OCR Level 3 NVQ in Business Administration and in the process developed and improved many of our office procedures whilst making us think about and tackle business areas that may have been slightly neglected. It was an interesting and very beneficial exercise for both of us and we thank the Train to Gain team for offering us this opportunity.

So congratulations to Sharon from all of us at the Cats Whiskers team for your outstanding achievement.

Dear Cancer

Earlier in the year I went to meet a wonderful lady by the name of Anna Antell. We had been introduced through a friend on Twitter because Anna was looking for a body painter to offer their services for a project entitled "Dear Cancer".

I spent an amazing day meeting some wonderful women at a lovely farm house in Oxfordshire (it offers B&B too, I'll try and dig out the link!!). They were styled and pampered and ultimately revealed their Cancer scars to be captured on camera.

These images have now been shown along with other artwork, poetry and sculpture at an amazing exhibition in MalMaison, Oxford.

All of this has been about raising awareness and ultimately money to support those suffering with Cancer and to work towards a cure.

UK Face & Body Art Convention 2010

Hello!

It's been a while and I appologise for my lack of posting. The Summer months are always are busiest and it gets a little crazy in the office here at Cats Whiskers!

Now we've almost recovered, I'll do my best to post about the fun we had during teh Summer months and get back to posting regularly about our current adventures.

This past weekend was the UK Face & Body Art Convention in Birmingham. I went up to paint for the Snazaroo team on the Saturday and had a fantastic time. Back in June I did a body painting shoot for them to create an advertsiting image and this design, painted on the stunningly beautiful Rowena Perry and photographed by Simon Webb at Blueskies photography, was used for the programme and on a sketch book & tin full of goodies given to every delegate at the convention. :o)

Revised Terms & Conditions of Cats Whiskers services

Please find below our revised Terms & Conditions which are effective immediately:

Terms and Conditions for the hiring of Cats Whiskers services:

1. CONFIRMING BOOKING: Returning the signed green Booking Confirmation Form along with a deposit will confirm your booking date and time. A stamped addressed envelope is enclosed for this purpose.
The deposit amount for this booking is £xx which is 30% of the booking fee or £25, whichever is the larger value.
If not received by xx/xx/2010, Cats Whiskers reserve the right to offer this date and time to other enquirers. / This booking is verbally agreed and returning the signed green Booking Confirmation Form will confirm it.

2. CANCELLATION / RESCHEDULING: If you need to cancel this event please inform the office immediately.
If you are cancelling the event within 48 hours of the start time you must speak directly with the Duty Manager on 07906 759610.
Deposits are non-refundable, however at the discretion of Cats Whiskers it may be transferred to a rescheduled date if that date is within three months of the original booking and we have staff available.
If a booking is cancelled within seven days of the booking date, 60% of the total booking fee will immediately become payable and an invoice will be issued. This increases to the full booking fee if the booking is cancelled within 48 hours of the booking start time.

3. PAYMENT: The balance of £50 is due in cash or by cheque on arrival at the event. / The balance of £50 is due within 30 days of the event. BACS details will be available on our invoice. All cheques should be made payable to “Helen Eyre”.

4. OUTSTANDING PAYMENTS: Cats Whiskers will rigorously pursue any late or outstanding payments and use all legal options at our disposal. This may include charging interest on late payments and claiming compensation for debt recovery costs as defined by the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998.

5. STAFFING: Please note that we cannot promise a specific artist(s). We will select the best artist available that is suitable for your needs and inform you of their name prior to the event. Whilst we will endeavour to paint every child at your event an artist’s average speed allows for between 10 - 12 faces per hour. Please do not ask us to disappoint any children due to lack of artists or time booked.

In the event that your allocated artist is unwell or incapacitated on the day of your booking, we will endeavour to find a replacement member of staff. However if this is not possible you will be advised as soon as is practicable and your deposit will be refunded in full.

6. FORCE MAJEURE: Cats Whiskers will not be liable for failure to perform our obligations if such failure is as a result of Acts of God (including fire, flood, earthquake, storm, hurricane, extreme weather conditions or other natural disaster), war, invasion, act of foreign enemies, hostilities (regardless of whether war is declared), civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, military or usurped power or confiscation, terrorist activities, nationalisation, government sanction, blockage, embargo, labor dispute, strike, lockout or interruption or failure of electricity or telephone service.

7. CODE OF PRACTISE / IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The Cats Whiskers Face Painting Code of Practise is attached to the reverse of this document. Please make sure you are familiar with its contents as it forms part of our contractual agreement with you. Also enclosed is an ‘Important Information’ document which will detail safety information and removal instructions for the products that we will be using at your event. Please take the time to read this information.

8. SUITABILITY OF VENUE / SHELTER & USE OF GAZEBO: Our staff require a safe, well lit and sheltered dry position from which they can operate. By signing the booking confirmation you are agreeing to provide this for them. We reserve the right, at no financial penalty to ourselves, for our staff members to remove themselves from a situation where they feel that they or those enjoying the services that we offer are unsafe.
At outdoor events where shelter is not already provided we may be able to supply our own branded gazebo. This is a substantial piece of equipment and consequently if only one person is booked we would request that the organisers provide an assistant to help our member of staff put up and take down the Gazebo safely.

9. LONE WORKING / BREAKS: Staff are entitled to comfort breaks during their working hours. Where staff are working for more than four hours they are entitled to at least a thirty minute rest break. Where two or more staff are booked, staff will manage breaks so that there is an uninterrupted service to your clients.
Where only one member of staff has been booked we request that they are never left alone with the children and that another adult is always present. During break times for lone workers the event organisers must ensure that the working environment and kit of our staff remains safe and secure.

10. SMOKING POLICY: The Smokefree (Premises and Enforcement) Regulations apply to all of our staff and consequently we respectfully remind our clients that all venues our staff are working in, including private homes, must remain smoke free for the duration of our work there.

11. DATA PROTECTION POLICY: Your information will only be used for Cats Whisker’s Face Painting’s administrative purposes. We may send occasional information regarding our services and a bi-annual newsletter. If you do not wish to be sent any information other than that pertaining to a booking, please advise our office staff.

Body Art at Hobbs Fashion Show 19th June

This is billed as the largest independant Fashion / Dance & Music event in Europe and the show starts at 8:30pm. Face Painting for Combat Stress at Hagley Hall - 4th July

Hagley Hall in Worcestershire is celebrating it's 250th anniversary this year and as part of that celebration they are hosting an event for all the family on 4th July.

The event coincides with two other large celebrations in the global calendar. American Independence Day will be celebrated with a Mustang and Spitfire air display whilst the Men's Finals at Wimbledon will be available for all to watch with your strawberries and cream on big screens!

The primary purpose of the whole event however, is to raise money for, and focus attention on, the very worthwhile cause of Combat Stress (http://www.combatstress.org.uk/).

There will be plenty of other activities on hand to keep the whole family entertained - including a team from Cats Whiskers offering face painting!

Who invented Velcro?

In a search today to find some Velcro dots for our sign packs, I came across this supplier in Yorkshire. Not only were they the most cost effective solution to my problem - but I was really interested to read about the history of Velcro. Sometimes you get so used to using a product that you forget to ask how it came into existence.

Fantastic Balloon Modelling Training

Len and I joined the talented Graham Lee from Balloon Art Wholesale, at Avonmouth today to play with balloons and put together some new designs to impress our clients.

We rediscovered a design for a Red Arrow aircraft and developed balloon designs for a Dinosaur, Lion & Tiger - and many more!!

It was also a fantastic opportunity to catch up with some of our entertainer friends. :o)

FACE Conference - Monster Award

Last weekend the FACE (Face Painting Association) Conference was held in Dawlish, Devon. The conference starts with the associations AGM and then involves the members in many demos, business seminars and competitions.

On the Friday evening after dinner we have a quiz and play face painting games and I also got to paint my friend and fellow entertainer, Dave Hickory. http://www.davehickory.co.uk/
Dave had spent most of the day creating a stunning Balloon Portcullis.

I was asked to do a demo on Clown's and Jesters - to keep with the weekends theme of the Medieval.

I came second in the Monster Competition which was sponsored by Dauphines of Bristol and received an engraved plate, a certificate and a voucher to go shopping! :)

On the Saturday evening we had a Medieval Gala with amazing entertainment and everyone in costume. Here I am in my Medieval Gown and I also painted Adrian from Snazaroo as an Evil Jester!

On Sunday we painted most of the children who came to the hotel for Mothers Day lunch. This young lady challenged me to paint a goth style face that matched her black, white and teal outfit so we settled for a skelebat design which she was really pleased with.

All in all a fantastic weekend with lots of new ideas shared!

New staff, new qualifications and a birthday!

It's been a while since I've posted - but that doesn't mean that things haven't been busy! Far from it. February is always a hectic month as it's my birthday month. This year I was 40 - eeek! But we celebrated with a fantastic family skiing holiday in La Tania (www.latania.co.uk).

Sharon did a wonderful job - as always - of keeping everything running smoothly whilst also completing the final section of her NVQ3 in Business Administration. We're now awaiting the verifier to check over her work and award her the qualification!

We have taken on four new team members and are currently in the process of training them to the Cats Whiskers standard before we launch them into the real face paining world of parties and events. So far their work is absolutely excellent and we are sure they will all be a fantastic addition to our team.

Bookings are pouring in for the next few months and this year promises to be our busiest yet!

This week we are looking forward to the Cats Whiskers team training night. We're also awaiting the launch of the next issue of Illusion Magazine (www.illusionmagazine.co.uk) and at the weekend I will be teaching at the FACE (Face Painting Association) Conference in Dawlish, Devon.

Cats Whiskers Face Painting International

I've been running Cats Whiskers for eight years now and during that time I have met and worked with some lovely and fantastically talented people. Two of these people have taken Cats Whiskers Face Painting to the international market place.

My original partner in crime was a fabulous lady called Cate Frampton who has subsequently emigrated to Melbourne, Australia and started Cats Whiskers over there (http://www.catswhiskers.com.au/). You can even find a picture of me from years ago in her gallery!!

Now the amazing talent that is Nina Griffee, who moved to Beijing in August last year, is entertaining at birthday parties in China with her fantastic face painting skills.
Here she is painting a fairy for one of her clients.

She's still wearing our orange Cats Whiskers t-shirt when she goes face painting, which must confuse her clients if they check out the website to find it's a company based in Bristol, England.

We're very much looking forward to seeing and working with Nina again when she rejoins our Bristol and Bath based team for the summer season. Then who knows where her travels will take her and what countries in the world will experience the "Cats Whiskers effect". ;)

Step by step Santa / Father Christmas cheek art

Painting Father Christmas on cheeks is very popular at this time of year! Here's a quick step by step for you using Snazaroo white, red and black face paint.

Step 1: Using white paint the band of the hat, the end bobble and the hair.
Step 2: Add the moustache and the beard.
Step 3: Using red, fill in the hat to connect the band and bobble; then add the nose and mouth detail.
Step 4: Using a fine brush and black face paint outline and add eyes.

Face & Body Art International Convention (FABAIC) 2009 Cover Girl!

In 2008 I travelled over to FABAIC in Florida to teach at the convention (See my blog entry about the trip:http://helen-at-cats-whiskers.blogspot.com/2008/06/body-painting-for-bodies-alive-at.html#links) and whilst I was there I took part in a spectacular performance organised by Christopher Agostino. The team I worked with painted seven girls for the "Dragon Dance". (Here's a link to the video of the performance of the Dragon Dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hua8L_tQoto)

Imagine my surprise when in July this year at the World Body Painting Championships in Austria, I bumped into one of the lovely models we'd painted and she mentioned that our photograph with our body painted models had been used for the front cover of the FABAIC 2009 brochure!

So, although the event happened in May of this year, I have finally tracked down a copy of the brochure and here it is!! Click on it to get a bigger view.

Unfortunately I don't know the names of all the models, but the painters are from the left Pam Trent, me, Karen Sawyer, Ginny C, Fairy Emily, Susie Pierce and Katie Hunt.

Rudolf cheek art step by step design for Christmas

For Rudolf we used Snazaroo Light Brown, White, Bright Red and Black face paints.

Step 1: Create two joining heart shapes - the top one is brown and the bottom white. Use petal brush strokes on either side of the brown heart shape to create ears.

Step 2: Using a fine brush and light brown face paint, create the antlers.

Step 3: Add a red nose at the join between the brown and red heart shapes and add a smaller dot of bright red at the bottom of the white heart shape for a tongue.
Step 4: Use a fine brush with black face paint to add eye's and the muzzle detail.

Face Painting for Children in Need at BBC Bristol & meeting Anthony Head

Friday 20th November was BBC Children in Need and the Cats Whiskers team supported the event in two different venues. Half of us were entertaining the wonderful volunteers who answer the phones and take the donations and the other half of us were invited to the canteen at BBC Bristol where the regional portion of the BBC Children in Need broadcast was taking place.

BBC Points West presenter Alex Lovell and actor Anthony Head were this years presenters. Great fun was had by everyone visiting as well as the whole of the Cats Whiskers team. Becky, a HUGE Wallace & Gromit fan, was allowed to hold the real Gromit! In her own wors, it was like her own personal Jim'll Fix It!! The team also had their photo's taken with Pudsey and Anthony Head and I was lucky enough to paint a Pudsey on his cheek and have a little moment on the TV with the presenters. :)

Body Painting & Get Technical in Illusion Magazine Issue 10

The eagerly anticipate issue 10 of Illusion magazine (www.illusionmagazine.co.uk) has finally arrived on my doorstep!

In this edition Snazaroo (www.snazaroo.com) have once again chosen one of my body paintings to advertise their wonderful brand of paint, which we at Cats Whiskers use for all our face and body painting work. The editing team have done an amazing job translating my technical page from the random scribbles I send them into a beautifully polished and professional piece of work. My thanks to them!!

Balloon Modelling fun at the Patricia Bunnell lecture

Last week I went to meet Patricia Bunnell from the US who was in the UK teaching us some of her fantastic Balloon modelling ideas. I learnt a lot from her including some ideas to organise my balloons which have already helped.

We learnt some fantastic Christmas balloons. Here is a brilliant Father Christmas balloon mask modelled by Dave Hickory (www.davehickory.co.uk), one of our entertainer friends.

And my personal favourite was Eeyore :)

Our photos from Halloween

The October Half Term was a busy assortment of work. We worked under marquees in beautiful gardens, did special requests for individuals, entertained at parties for children and adults and did a big promotional event for our local shop - where we were mobbed! LOL!

But firstly we started off with a training night to refresh our memories of some of the Halloween designs that only get dusted off once a year.

I was first introduced to Anne-marie when I moved back to Bristol seven years ago and I was looking for a Music Group to join with my nearly 2 year old son. We went to Music with Mummy with Anne-marie and really enjoyed it . Both of my children followed the Music with Mummy & Three Four Time programme until they started school (they're now 7 &9!).

The sessions were always great fun but we also made friendships in our group that have lasted to this day, even though some people have moved all over the country! The MUSIC with MUMMY programme will take your child on a musical journey from birth until they go to school. The structured weekly music classes are designed to encourage many things, including listening and social skills, so essential not only in music but in all other areas of learning. They will also develop a sense of rhythm, that will help with learning and speech development. The fabulous music and songs are a mixture of traditional tunes and songs that are unique to our programme. Watch your child grow in confidence as they come each week and take part in our small, friendly classes.

JOLLY BABIES– Your baby’s first musical experience. We sing with them, we dance with them, we rock them, we bounce them, we tickle them and stimulate them. A wonderful opportunity to bond with your baby, to make new friends and to have FUN! Age birth to approx 14 months.

MUSIC with MUMMY - the fun continues as the children progress into this next age group. Each term there will be a new theme such as Colours, Transport, Spring and Good Manners. Musical objectives are gently introduced through our fun songs and games, for example rhythm, pitch, and tempo. Age approx 14 months to 3yrs.

THREE-FOUR TIME - the icing on the cake! When the children are ready, normally around 3 yrs, they start to come without mum. We sing, dance and play amazing percussion and always have enormous fun! The themes are mainly based on stories or classical pieces of music such as Peter and The Wolf, Sleeping Beauty and Noah’s Ark. The last week of each theme you are welcome to come and sit in our last class. Watch your child grow in confidence week by week until they are ready to go to school (the only sad part of our journey together).

Cats Whiskers Balloon Modelling Training Night

Last Thursday night the balloon modelling members of the Cats Whiskers team got together for a spot of training to refresh a few designs and learn some more new balloon modelling designs.

It was Becky's first introduction to balloon modelling training and as you can see, she really enjoyed the experience!! Particularly modelling Len's rather spectacular Ghost Busters back pack and slime gun! (excuse the quality of the picture - I love my phone but the camera isn't the best quality!!)

I took three bin bags of balloon models to my local pre-school the next day which put huge smiles on the children's faces :)

Happy Birthday to Radio Lollipop Bristol!

Workshop announcement - 10th October

Cats Whiskers will be running a face painting and Special FX wounds workshop on Saturday 10th October 2009 between 10 - 4:30 at the Downend Folk House, Bristol. Price will be £65 for the day including a buffet lunch.

We will be including face painting techniques, health & safety issues and covering designs for cats, butterflies, flower fairies and goblins as well as using the special effect wax to create gruesome wounds. Depending upon time available we may even get to do a Vampire to get you ready for Halloween!!

A big thank you to everyone who booked us during the summer! The Cats Whiskers team have had SO much fun!! :) We've been to parties, festivals, summer camps, fun days and open days all over the area in Bristol, Bath and the South West. So, my apologies for taking so long to update the blog - but there has just been way too much fun going on for me to catch up until now.

So, the children are back at school, the tree's are turning colour, nights are drawing in and we're really looking forward to Halloween!!

But before we get carried away with the witches and vampires, here are some of the highlights of the summer:

Fun at the Bristol Harbour Festival 2009

On the 1st & 2nd August 2009 the Cats Whiskers face painting team participated in the Bristol Harbour Festival in the children's area on Queen's Square. Although the weather looked a little suspect for the Saturday the crowds still came and we all had great fun painting the children's and adults faces during the weekend as well as doing some temporary tattoos. World Body Painting Festival

Between the 17th & 19th July I was lucky enough to be in Seeboden, Austria for the World Body Painting Festival (http://www.bodypainting-festival.com/). It has been going now for over ten years and attracts body painting artists from all over the world, as well as photographers and suppliers. Thousands of spectators also come along to enjoy watching the artists work as well as the stage presentations, music and amazing firework display on the last night.

On Friday the weather was hot as we all worked under canvas on the first day of the brush and sponge competition. It was my first year there and it was an amazing experience - I learnt such a lot. I hadn't realised quite how many people utilised the option of having an "assistant" help them to create their body art, so working on my own I was really pleased to get 46th place.

The theme was "Poetry - the power of words". It’s based on the concept that the power of poetry is the emotional response and being set free into your imagination. There is a play on words with the tree on the back also being the poet – poet-tree.

My model was the very lovely and utterly talented Tina Hörmann from Austria.

We were also included on Bodypaint City TV's Friday highlights:

On Saturday I worked with the Snazaroo team. Snazaroo is a face & body paint manufacturer based in Minehead, UK (http://www.snazaroo.com/) and obviously the Cats Whiskers team use their face & body paint for all our work!!

The weather changed completely in the morning with a huge downpour of rain, so it was a slow start! Some of the competitions that were being held were delayed or did not go ahead quite as planned but after lunch the sun shone, the day warmed up and the festival ground sprung back into life. We had a busy afternoon on the Snazaroo stand and Luc Bec, a talented face painter and Snazaroo reseller from Belgium, and myself had fun face painting on the Snazaroo stand for the festival goers. I even managed to paint a pregnant tummy!! :)

I may not have gotten into the finals of the brush and sponge competition, but I had planned my design so on Sunday I body painted Tina again but this time in the Snazaroo stand as a demonstration. Sunday's theme was "Spirituality - beyond the visible eye". The idea behind it is the third eye and inner spirituality which are represented by the seven chakras. The path of spiritual enlightenment requires balance which is represented by the yin & yang. The white tiger is yin and the green dragon is yang in Chinese teachings.

When we went to the photo area to take photo's taken of the design, Tina was spotted by one of Gigi D'Agostino's stage crew (he is apparently a really huge DJ in Italy!?) and invited to dance on stage whilst he performed!! :)

It was a fantastic weekend where I met loads of old friends from the face & body art world and made some new ones; learnt loads and laughed even more. I'm looking forward to next year!!

Dragon Dance Video from the Face & Body Art International Convention (FABAIC) 2008

Nearly a year ago I travelled over to Florida to be an instructor at FABAIC and part of the amazing experience I had over there involved taking part in Bodies Alive! This was a performance involving lots of body painting, dance, culture and much more.

The performance was filmed but soon after the film became lost and we thought we would never see it - however Christopher Agostino, whose idea the show was, has tracked it down and it is now available to see!!!

Cats Whiskers out & about this Saturday!

Too busy face painting to take photos!!

We have had a fabulous couple of weeks working hard to entertain people and assist in promotions with face painting, balloon modelling, temporary tattoos, workshops and henna. So busy in fact that we've not been able to take many photographs to show you!

We have entertained at birthday parties with face painting, balloon modelling and even a casualty and wounds workshop!

We have face painted at promotional events for Clevedon Children's Centre, Tescos Metro Staple Hill and in Villa Park for the Aston Villa versus Hull match! The Villa Park football event was incredibly busy but really amazing fun!

We have partied with the students at the May Ball creating delicate eye masks for the girls and obviously painting one or two spidermen and tigers for the boys. ;)

We've undertaken a private Henna booking and private training workshops.

And we've had a slightly more cultural moment face painting at Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

Henna at Sunnyhill

Last Friday night I had the opportunity to go back to my old Secondary school, Sunnyhill in Bruton, to provide Henna for their Bollywood themed sixth form party.

It was a really fun event with all the girls in good spirits! I was crazy busy for my whole time there and was a bit concerned that I hadn't taken enough Henna with me - but in the end it worked out just right!

I was that busy that I didn't get to take many pictures. In fact I only took a couple which were where I'd done the Henna design on shoulders! Taking a photo and showing them was the easiest way to let them see what their Henna design looked like!

This picture is of my hand design the next day with paste off. It developed a bit further into a lovely deep chocolate brown colour. The design is still looking good a week later. :)

I also got the chance to wander around school before the event started and revisit my old haunts. Strange how places look smaller over time! LOL!

Body Painting - Harley Quinn

Holly has an amazing Joker tattoo on her arm and David had a cunning plan to body paint her as Harley Quinn - the Jokers girlfriend - and make her look as though she'd just been in a fight.

Cover Artists!

OK, so it's been a while since I've blogged but it certainly isn't because there's been nothing to blog about! We've been really busy with work, exciting projects and taking orders. :)

I've also gotten quite obsessed with Twitter, so if you follow my feed (CatsWhiskersFP), you'll get a snap shot of the madness and mayhem that we exist in!!

One of the most recent events to get really excited about was that Sharon and I became cover artists!! We recently worked with Bristol City Football Club to body paint midfielder Marvin Elliott for his focus piece in their match programme and it was used as the cover image as well. :D

Scooby Doo face painting design

Here's a Scooby Doo face painting design that we do at Cats Whiskers Face Painting.

I'm posting this for Carol from the Face and Body Painting group on Google (http://groups.google.com/group/Face-and-Body-Painting/browse_thread/thread/4c865300c96cc395?hl=en) who is looking for a Scooby Doo face painting design for the weekend.

The trick with Scooby is that his nose needs to be painted higher than you would normally on a typical face painted dogs face. That then lets you put the cheeks & jowls in the correct place.

Traditional Party Games - Kings / Queens Keys

I've always known this party game as Queens Keys - but researching on the internet I found something similar called Stalkers, so I guess there are many versions. This is good for those five years and up.

You will need:
A group of children sat in a circle, a blindfold (big scarf), a chair in the centre of the circle and a bunch of keys underneath it. Several adults to supervise.

The object of this party game is silence :)

Sit someone on the chair in the centre of the circle with the blindfold on. They are the Queen or King.

The main adult supervising the game will select one of the children sat in the circle by touching them on the head. They will be the thief.

The thief then has to walk quietly around the outside of the circle and back through the space where they were originally sat to get to the chair and take the keys.

When the thief is selected the adult lets the Queen/King know that there is someone ready to steal the keys. The King/Queen then has to listen for any sounds and point at them. (Which means the rest of the circle has to be very quiet!) If they point directly at the thief, the thief is out and another person will be selected. This is where having several adults to supervise can help. Often the thief will contest the fact that the King/Queen actually pointed at them so several pairs of eyes are useful. :)

If the thief steals the keys then they get to be the Queen/King!

Variations: Using the scenario above, you can give the King/Queen a torch and turn the lights out for the game. Then instead of pointing they can shine the torch to try and catch the thief.

Another option is to get all the children to line up at one end of the room with the King/Queen on their chair at the opposite end of the room. The children in the line are allowed to start advancing quietly across the room with a small time interval between them. Again, you'll need plenty of adult spotters to make sure those who are pointed at return to the back of the line and start again! This option is possibly better for the younger children who won't be able to sit still in the circle until it's their turn!

Cats Whiskers paint Bristol City players for Comic Relief!

This afternoon Sharon and I met Adriano Basso and Ivan Sproule, football players for Bristol City, at the David Lloyd gym (http://www.davidlloyd.co.uk/home/clubs/bristol), Ashton Gate as part of a fund raising activity at the Gym for Comic Relief.

Adriano had his face painted with his famous saying "Always Believe" and the Red Nose designs whilst Ivan had his chest painted with a Red Nose version of the Bristol City Supporters club shield.

Bodys Alive! Video

This blog all started when I returned from FABAIC, Orlando at the end of May last year and decided to share the experience I'd had. Whilst at the Face & Body Art International Convention I had taken part in a body painting show which was the brain child of Christopher Agostino - and it was fantastic!!

Traditional Party Games - Pass the Parcel

OK, so this is one that everybody knows but there are variations that might prove useful for you!

You will need: A small prize that has been wrapped with many layers of paper. It doesn't have to be expensive wrapping paper. Pages from magazines and newspapers are great!

If you are in a situation where you're likey to play this game regularly or you really hate the waste, you can make draw string bags of slightly smaller sizes - like Russian dolls - for the wrapping.

You can put a sweet inbetween each layer for the children, but I prefer to put a forfeit inbetween each layer.

If you are trying to be fair and make sure that everyone gets a turn at unwrapping a layer you will need to make sure you know how many layers there are! A simple way of gauging when you are close to the prize is to change the type of wrapping. Use silver foil for a layer, for example. Alternatively if you are using forfeits, you can write the number of layers on the back so that the person in charge of the game knows!!

Example Forfeits:
These were used for a 7 year olds High School Musical Party - but you get the idea and you can adapt for your theme!

Say the days of the week backwards
What character does Zac Efron play?
Shake hands with everyone in the circle
Act like a chicken
Sing Baa baa black sheep
Skip around the outside of the circle
Act like a monkey
Name seven things that you would find in a bathroom
Wear a pair of gloves for the rest of the game
Pat your head and rub your tummy
Hop around the outside of the circle
Sing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, once I caught a fish alive…
Count from 10 backwards to 0
What is the name of the actress that plays Sharpay?
In which High School Musical film is the song “Bet on it”?
Sing and do the actions for Heads, Shoulders Knees and Toes.
Say the tongue twister, “Peter Piper picked a pec of pickled peppers, a pec of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked” four times really quickly or pick an adult to do it for you!
Dance like Sharpay
Stretch up high and then touch your toes
Name seven things that you can find at school
Wear a woolly hat for the rest of the game
Have two sweets!
Shout “Wildcats!” really loudly
Say all the months of the year
Act like a basket ball player
Act like someone playing golf
Touch all four walls of the room
Act like a cheerleader
Say the nursery rhyme, Mary had a little lamb
Sing “Twinkle twinkle little star”

How to play:

Sit the children in a circle and have someone operate the CD player to stop and start the music. Keep up a reasonable pace with stopping the music so you maintain the interest of the children. Have someone else armed with a bin bag to clear up the wrapping as you go.

When the music stops the child holding the parcel takes of a layer and does the forfeit - if you've included them. If they are shy, let them nominate a friend to do their forfeit with them. If they do it successfully depending upon your view on rewards they can just get a round of applause from the circle, be offered a sweet or offered a small non-sugar related gift.

Depending upon the number of children and the number of wrappings, this game can take up quite a bit of time - particularly if you've added forfeits! :)

Fairy Pregnant Tummy Painting

I was invited to a baby shower this evening to paint a pregant tummy for a lovely lady by the name of Sarah.

We'd discussed designs in advance and her request was for a fairy tale theme of a baby with small wings curled up on a toadstool and some ivy-type leaves framing the main art with some purple and white 'whimsical' flowers.

Blood and Gore workshop

Today I did a wounds & casualty make up workshop at the Merlin Theatre in Frome for a group of 8 - 14 year olds. They were a lovely group and we had a lot of fun as you can see from the pictures!

This young lady really went for it! And the fantastic story she came up with to explain her range of wounds and injuries kept us all entertained.

The website has been updated

I've spent the day tweaking the website and I've just uploaded a new version.

There are some new pictures - mainly on the front pages - and a couple of articles, one is a review of my private training workshop and the other shows publicity generated by our body painting for Cancer Research UK.

We have a whole page dedicated to Glitter Tattoos now and hope it will help boost their popularity because they are a lot of fun and look amazing.

Also, I've added the Baby Kicks - pregnant tummy art - page to the main menu so it is more easily accessible.

I've also taken away the separate page for our clients comments and added an appropriate comment onto the individual services pages. Remember that if you want to add any comments about Cats Whiskers and our services they can be added on this blog and also on our Facebook group, the link to which can now be found on the Memberships and Associations page of the website.

I hope you like the changes! Let me know if you spot any spelling mistakes or horrific grammar. LOL!
